Q2. In singles match play playing their third shot on the 11th, Player A is 120 yards from the green and Player B is 110 yards away. Player A plays first and tops his ball into the pond. He chooses to take Stroke & Distance relief back to 120 yards from the green. Who’s turn is it to play next?
A. Player A
B. Player B
C. Whoever is ready first
Rule 6.4d (1) - When Player Takes Relief or Will Play Provisional Ball from Anywhere Except Teeing Area
When Player Has Choice to Play Ball as It Lies or Take Relief.
-The player’s order of play is based on the spot where the original ball lies (which if not known must be estimated).
-This applies even when the player has already decided to take stroke-and-distance relief or to take relief to play from a different place than where the original ball lies (such as when the original ball is in a penalty area or will be treated as unplayable).
So, it’s where your original ball lies, not where you choose to take relief that dictates the honour. Because Player A’s ball lies in the pond, it is nearer the hole than Player B’s ball, so it’s Player B’s honour, even if Player A chooses to take ‘Stroke & Distance’ relief from the Penalty Area, which will take him further from the hole than Player B.

Q3. A player tees off on the 18th and the ball heads towards the red water hazard down the right-hand side. Not sure whether it’s finished in the hazard or not, the player hits a second tee shot and announces it as their provisional, which finishes in the fairway.
The player finds the original ball in the Penalty Area. Which option or options below are permissible ways to proceed?
A. Play the ball from the penalty area for their second stroke.
B. Take lateral one shot relief from the Penalty Area and play their third stroke.
C. Play the second ball, laying on the fairway, for their fourth stroke.
Rule 18.3a - When Provisional Ball Is Allowed
If a ball might be lost outside a penalty area or might be out of bounds, to save time the player may play another ball provisionally under penalty of stroke and distance (see Rule 14.6). This includes when:
-The original ball has not been found and identified and is not yet lost,
-A ball might be lost in a penalty area but also might be lost somewhere else on the course, or
-A ball might be lost in a penalty area but might also be out of bounds.
If a player makes a stroke from where the previous stroke was made with the intent of playing a provisional ball, but a provisional ball was not allowed, the ball played is the player’s ball in play under penalty of stroke and distance.
NB If you know your ball went into a Penalty Area or think it might have done, you cannot play a Provisional Ball, unless you believe your ball could also be out of bounds or lost somewhere other than the PA. Therefore, in this instance of the stream down the 18th, the player knew their original ball wasn’t lost or out of bounds, so have given up all other relief options by playing a second ball. They must now continue with that ball for their fourth shot.
