Q1. A gust of wind moves a player’s ball on the putting green before they have had chance to mark, lift and replace it. What is the correct procedure?
A. Replace the ball on its original position
B. Play the ball from where it lies
C. Play from whichever of the above is furthest from the hole
Rule 9.3 If natural forces (such as wind or water) cause a player’s ball at rest to move:
- There is no penalty, and
- The ball must be played from its new spot.
Exception – Ball on Putting Green Must Be Replaced If It Moves AFTER Having Already Been Lifted and Replaced (see Rule 13.1d): If the player’s ball on the putting green moves AFTER the player had already lifted and replaced the ball on the spot from which it moved:
- The ball must be replaced on its original spot (which if not known must be estimated) (see Rule 14.2).
- This is true no matter what caused it to move (including natural forces).
Q2. During Winter Rules, a player chooses to mark then lift their ball from the rough to clean it. Using their club to manoeuvre the ball to replace it on the exact same spot, they then hit their shot onto the green. What is the ruling.
A. Two Stroke Penalty
B. One Stroke Penalty
C. No Penalty
See Definitions for ‘Replace’
Interpretation Replace /1 - Ball May Not Be Replaced with a Club
For a ball to be replaced in a right way, it must be set down and let go.
This means the player must use his or her hand to put the ball back in play on the spot it was lifted or moved from.
The player must not replace the ball by rolling it to the required spot with a club. By doing so, the ball is not replaced in the right way and the player gets a one stroke penalty.
The mistake may be corrected without penalty before the stroke is made.
NB. Our Winter Rules have changed since writing this question and you can now ‘Place’ the ball within 6 inches of its original position.
Q3. Part of a player’s ball lies on a painted white line on the ground that marks an area of GUR. The rest of the ball lies in the General Area. Is the ball in GUR?
A. Yes
B. No
C. You can choose
Definition GUR - When defined by a painted line on the ground, the edge of the ground under repair is the outside edge of the line, and the line itself is in the ground under repair.
Rule 16.1a - Interference exists when: The player’s ball touches or is in or on an abnormal course condition, which includes GUR.
