CAPTAIN'S REPORT - OCTOBER 2023

It is with great pride and humility that I write to you for the first time as your Captain.

For those that weren’t able to be there for the Drive in and Presentation Night, I thought it would be good to update you on a few things.

The drive soared and went 250 yards ish down the middle – well in my head it did! – maybe it was 200 yards left and in the rough??? BUT it was away from the tee and I made contact – trust me that was good enough for me. Thanks to those that came to watch and Pete Harris for retrieving the ball.

Presentation night went well and I was very proud, when Adrian Jowett our outgoing Captain, formally presented me with my Jacket. It’s at this point that I must thank the Past Captains for putting their trust in me to be Captain. I also want to thank Adrian for putting my name forward in the first place, for his sterling work during the year, making Vice Captain easy, and for his incredible work on his Charity MND (in conjunction with the President), raising an incredible £23,000 plus – amazing.

That brings me nicely to my charity for the year which is a local Huddersfield charity – The Forget Me Not Trust/ Hospice – which provides care for children with terminal illnesses and their families. Every parent’s worst unthinkable nightmare to be told your child is terminally ill. I hope you will feel able to support – there are donation buckets and collection boxes around the club. From a golfing point of view, my choice of penalty hole is the bunkers on 17, so if you go in one, please drop a £1.00 in the box, or just let me have £20 for the year!!! It might prove to be a good discount!! I will not be trying to chase Adrian’s total but there may be things during the year for you to participate in – look out for my emails!!!

Looking forward, sadly a new Captain always faces winter golf – there are many decisions to be made not least of which is should the course be open. I hope most of you will know me well enough to know that I will always do what I believe is best for everyone, the course and the club – I will seek advice from the professionals involved and some of our experienced Past Captains / Members etc before making any decisions. Let’s hope winter is kind.

For the summer, as I said on Saturday Night, let’s hope the sun shines, the fairways run, the greens are receptive, the ball goes in the hole and our handicaps come down. Captain’s Day is the 8th June get it in your diary now, for both the days golf and the evening’s entertainment.

In the meantime, please support The Gents Dinner on 10th November it really is a good night and I will be announcing my Vice Captain – how time flies.

Thank you – a very, very proud if somewhat apprehensive.

Steve Passey
