CAPTAIN'S REPORT - JUNE 2023

CAPTAIN’S DAY
I would like to start this report covering what was a great day in my captain’s year and one of the best days I’ve had in my whole time as a member. My Captains Day was on the 17th of June, and I need to start with some very important words of thanks.

Firstly, to Steve Passey, Lee Shepherd, and his team for sorting the scorecards, results and making the day go seamlessly from start to finish with regards to all things golf. It is a long day and I really appreciate your time and effort. Dave Woodcock, Paul Sykes, and his green keeping team for presenting a golf course that was simply magnificent and I’m sure everyone who played would agree whole heartedly. Kris and Craig in the kitchen and all their staff for their support with all catering and a night that was thoroughly enjoyable by all who attended.

Finally, to Diane and all the ladies in the halfway house feeding and watering everyone who came through as well as selling raffle tickets to raise money for the MNDA. On this day alone, we raised over £1800 so thank you to everyone for your support of this great charity.

The winner of Captains Day was Mr Phil Lockwood with an incredible score of nett 62. This wasn’t the only Captains Day held, the winner of the 5/5 Day Plus Captains Day was Mr David Swaine with a score of 68 nett and the winner of the Captains Day for Ladies was Mrs Denise Nudds with a score of 70 nett. Congratulations to all the winners across the board, from nearest the pin winners to the main winners of each competition.

Across all these days, I cannot believe how much support I have received, it is really humbling, and I want to thank everyone who made this period of time for me as special as possible.

THE MNDA CHARITY GOLF DAY
Thank you for the response to the Charity Day we have booked in for the 1st of September. The support for this day has been incredible so far but we are pleased to say that we have just two team spaces remaining. If this is something you would like to get involved in, then please contact the Professionals Shop ASAP to get your name down. This is set to be a great day of golf followed by a social event including an auction of signed merchandise and so much more. For those who have committed, payment can be taken now in the Professionals Shop. This is a charity close to my heart and I am very much looking forward to this event.

LADIES
The ladies have got a new playing initiative this year that is now full. This is for ladies to get into golf. Together our Ladies’ Section and our Professionals will be working together to help the new recruits on their golfing journey. We say journey because golf takes you places that you’d never thought you be. Whether that’s on the first tee at Cleckheaton, or on the first tee at St Andrews. This is something that we as a club are excited about and I am looking forward to watching this unfold.

TEAMS
The league season is at the halfway point for most of our sections this season. Whether this is the Scratch league for both Gents and Ladies, 8-15’s, Rabbits, Seniors, or Ladies Annodata. Coming into the back end of the season, I’d like to wish every team and section a strong finish to the year and hopefully we can get Cleckheaton’s name up near the top if not on the top of all the league tables. Best of luck to everyone.

TOM LOCKWOOD
For those unaware, the Bradford Amateur Championship was held at Baildon Golf Club and one of our own, Mr Tom Lockwood came away with the best nett score. A great achievement to be crowned the best nett amateur golfer across the Bradford Union. Well Done, Tom.

NORTH OF ENGLAND SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIP
Once again, we were able to host the North of England Schools Championship, which is a fantastic event to host and shows how highly our golf club is thought of, not just in Yorkshire but in the North of England. The scoring wasn’t as low as people thought it would be with such a stellar field that included the Yorkshire Boys Champion. The event consisted of 36 holes of Strokeplay with the best Boys score being 70+76 and the best Girls score being 74+74. It is great to see such young talent playing at our course and I wish them nothing but the best for the future.

THE WEATHER
We have been extremely lucky to have had such a fantastic period of weather that has been perfect for golf. Who would have thought earlier on in the year the weather switch could have been flipped so quickly between soaking wet and bone dry? Long may it continue moving forwards so we can continue this summer of great golf.

FEEDBACK
It has been great to hear so many positives about our golf club. The course has received praise from far and wide from both members and visitors alike. We always strive to provide the best facility possible for everyone who comes here and so far, I am really proud of everyone concerned with the club both on and off the course. Long may the praise continue, and the profile of the club continue to grow in a positive light.

Best Regards

Adrian Jowett
